Porsche begins production of the new electric Macan in Germany
The German manufacturer plans to make the first deliveries in Europe of its new electric SUV during the second half of the year.
The first units of the new Macan have already started rolling off the assembly line at the German plant of Porsche in Leipzig. The company announced this in a statement published this past Tuesday. The Stuttgart-based firm presented the new Macan last January and, as we have known since then, it will be available in two versions, both fully electric.
For production of the new Macan to get underway, Porsche first had to make a multi-billion-euro investment over recent years to adapt its Leipzig plant to the production of electric vehicles as well. However, the company stresses that it wants to remain flexible and be able to adapt to changes in demand at any given moment. That is why Leipzig will not only produce electric models such as the new Macan, but also others with combustion engines or hybrids.

In any case, at Porsche they are clear that the future is electric, as CEO Oliver Blume has expressed. Following the market launch of the first-generation Taycan in 2019, the new Macan is the second model from the Stuttgart firm with a fully electric powertrain.

Modernizing the Leipzig plant to make the production of electric models such as the Macan possible has also made it possible to improve the plant’s efficiency and reduce its environmental impact. According to the company, all the improvements carried out at the Leipzig plant have allowed production of the Porsche Macan to be carbon neutral. This is only a first step, however, toward the company’s ultimate goal, which is none other than making the entire value chain of all its manufactured vehicles carbon neutral. At Porsche they are confident this will be possible by around 2030.

Now that production of the new Macan has started in Leipzig, the company expects to make the first deliveries during the second half of the year, although for the moment it has not announced a more precise date. Perhaps this very summer? What is certain is that demand for Porsche’s new electric SUV will not be lacking, at least initially. In this regard, Oliver Blume wanted to point out that the Stuttgart firm has already registered 10,000 orders for the new Macan. A surprising figure considering that all these orders were placed without being able to see the car in person or test it, based simply on videos published on YouTube and other media and on the information that has appeared in the automotive press and on blogs such as HighMotor.
