Check here for the full schedule to follow the 2018 Spanish GP, as the MotoGP World Championship arrives this weekend at the Circuito de Jerez.
The 2018 motorcycle world championship arrives in Europe this weekend (4, 5 and 6 May) and, as is customary, it does so by landing in Jerez. The Andalusian city is once again the stage for the Spanish GP, one of the great prix most eagerly awaited by riders and fans for the great atmosphere that surrounds both the city and the Jerez circuit.
The Jerez circuit is especially special for Spanish riders, who already clinched the podium sweep there in 2017. This year 2018, the circuit will also get a new name, becoming Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto, a decision taken following the death of the former Spanish rider, and it will be just one of the several tributes planned for the great champion during this motorcycling weekend in Jerez.
A Spaniard, Marc Márquez, arrives as leader of the championship in the MotoGP category after winning in Austin, his favourite circuit. Jerez is not exactly the circuit where he performs best, as he has won there only once (in 2014) across all categories. If anyone masters the corners of the Jerez layout, it is Valentino Rossi, who has won in Jerez in every category, seven of those times as a premier-class rider.
In Moto2, the younger Márquez hopes to repeat last year’s victory and open his winning account in a 2018 in which he is expected to challenge for the world title. For now, the rider from the Estrella Galicia 0’0 team has not been able to get past the Italians Bagnaia and Pasini, who have shared the victories in the three grands prix held so far and go as favourites to win the Spanish GP.
If the MotoGP race looks very open and Moto2 points to an Italian duel, in Moto3 everything suggests a new showdown between Jorge Martín, who leads the championship with two wins in the three grands prix we have had, and Aron Canet. The Estrella Galicia rider, who has only managed to finish second twice, knows what it takes to win at the Jerez circuit, as he did so last year.
