Production of the new BMW iX1 begins
More than 3,300 employees work on the production of electric components at the BMW Group.

Production of the all-electric BMW iX1 has now started in Regensburg. This move illustrates the pace at which the BMW Group is driving electromobility. As announced almost two years ago, all German plants can now produce electric cars. The smallest model among BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicles will boost the volume of electric vehicles.
Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, already announced that the next milestone after the start of production would be “to meet the targets. By 2024, at least one in three BMW vehicles leaving our Bavarian plants will be an electric car.” Further proof, then, that the BMW Group is systematically implementing its electrification strategy, prioritising speed and short distances. The high-voltage battery of the BMW iX1 also comes from Regensburg.
BMW iX1, closer than ever

The start of production of the new BMW iX1 means that the BMW Group plant in Regensburg is now building all drive technologies on a single line as part of its flexible production process, for models with combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles. According to Carsten Regent, plant manager of the BMW Group in Regensburg, “electrification and the transformation of the plant make me optimistic about the future. Our goal now – also with the new BMW iX1 – is to continue impressing customers around the world with cars built in Regensburg.”
By the end of 2022, the BMW Group will have invested a total of more than 1.6 billion euros in the production of electric components at its German sites in Dingolfing, Leipzig and Regensburg. Currently, more than 3,300 employees work on the production of the BMW Group’s electric components at these locations.
