Renault has presented the Twizy Sport F1 as a concept car, a vehicle based on the brand’s electric city car, but fitted with wings, tyres, steering wheel, diffuser and features of a Formula 1 car. It was unveiled this morning at Renault’s Valladolid factory, but it will never go into production.

The vehicle has been largely developed by engineers from Renault’s Formula 1 division, applying the technology of motorsport’s premier category to a road car. The prototype benefits from a KERS system that adds 30 kg and has been placed where the Twizy’s second seat would be.

The Renault Twizy Sport F1 Concept increases its power to 17 CV under normal conditions, a figure delivered by a small electric motor that sends its power to the rear wheels. As in Formula 1, the KERS system fitted to this unusual Twizy recovers energy from braking. With the system batteries fully charged, the concept car can deliver up to 79 CV.

On the steering wheel there is a button that gives access to all the energy stored in the batteries, allowing it to break the 100 km/h barrier. The total weight of the vehicle is 595 kg, 91 kg more than a standard Twizy, but unlike the latter, the Sport F1 offers an improved power-to-weight ratio.

The bodywork has been painted in yellow and black in tribute to the brand’s former Formula 1 cars.
