Rivian will offer a dual-motor option for the R1S from autumn onwards

One of the brands specialising in electric cars is Rivian. This brand has launched two models that have caught the attention of many buyers. Now, they want to add a little extra spice to these models and are announcing new features arriving on the Rivian R1S this coming autumn.

This news centres on the introduction of a dual-motor version that will power the brand’s electric SUV. In addition, to increase the capacity to power this dual-motor model, the Rivian R1S will get a larger battery pack. There are not many details on either matter yet, but we know the expected range will be 628 kilometres.

Current versions

At present, the Rivian R1S is offered in a version with four motors and a large battery pack. With this configuration it achieves a maximum range of 517 kilometres under the EPA cycle. Another version available has two motors, like the variant arriving in autumn, but its battery pack is smaller and offers a range of 418 kilometres.

For the new version arriving at the end of the year, it is expected to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. This places this version below the four-motor one, which reaches it in three seconds. The current two-motor version reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.5 seconds.

A dual-motor version will be offered, delivering a total output of 447 kW, equivalent to 608 CV, while anyone wanting one more step of power will have to opt for the Dual+ version, with two motors that deliver 522 kW, that is, around 700 CV. The new variant will keep the seven seats, so no efficiency will be lost with this new equipment.

For the time being no further details about the new variant are available, but the company says it will contact those who have already reserved their unit to give them access to this new version of the SUV.
