SafeHalo: say goodbye to your phone in the car

SafeHalo is a new app that restricts mobile phone use while driving by locking it so that we cannot get distracted while we are on the road

Driving distractions are one of the great scourges on our roads and, although their danger is more than proven, there are still drivers who keep falling into them.

Although the mobile phone is the main cause of driving distractions on our roads, it is not the only one. Therefore, don’t miss our report on which distractions are most often fined in Spain or which are the most dangerous.

Therefore, using a mobile phone while driving is the most frequent offence, and according to reports provided by the Mapfre Foundation, sending a simple text message can multiply the chances of having an accident by 23. Moreover, this behaviour is even more pronounced among young drivers, since 80% of young people get distracted while driving.

All the parties involved in traffic are trying to offer solutions in this regard, which is why fines have been toughened and more speed cameras have been installed.

Today we present a new app called SafeHalo. It has been developed by a Canadian company and locks your phone while you are driving. In addition, the main difference is that it cannot be switched on or off whenever the user wants; we tell you more.

Hablar conduciendoHow does SafeHalo work?

SafeHalo uses GPS triangulation to create a phone-free environment. When we install this app on our smartphone, we must also place some beacons in our car that send signals to our device.

Once the driver gets into their vehicle, these beacons detect it and automatically lock the mobile phone. SafeHalo allows the driver to connect the phone via Bluetooth to the car’s infotainment system and make a call to the emergency services if necessary.

Therefore, making any personal call is impossible, just as receiving or sending text messages is. Of course, access to social networks is also completely disabled.

In this way, our mobile phone will only be available to answer incoming calls or to play music or use GPS, provided we do so before setting off.

With SafeHalo, the developer company claims that roads will be safer for everyone, although they acknowledge that many more types of distraction still need to be eradicated.

The main advantage of SafeHalo is that it works with any car and phone model, and its operation is very simple. It is not yet on sale, so we will have to wait to learn more about how it works and, above all, its price.
