We conclude the test of the Škoda Superb Combi with this third part where we will talk about its equipment, the prices of this Superb Combi and our overall assessment of the model. We discussed the engine in the first part of the test: it is the 2.0 TDI with 170 CV, which stands out for the good response it offers to move this estate, as well as the extra comfort of the six-speed DSG gearbox.

In the second part we looked at the exterior design of the Superb Combi, a design with personality but fairly conservative lines. On the other hand, we also reviewed its interior, where the dominant theme is space, since it has comfortable rear seats with outstanding legroom, as well as a generous boot.

Equipment

superb

As usual, we start with the review of the equipment, looking first at the safety features that this Škoda comes with as standard. In terms of safety it is quite comprehensive, with front, side and curtain airbags, plus a knee airbag. Electronic stability control and ABS also come as standard, along with the emergency braking assist, and as for the results of the crash test carried out by EuroNCAP, the Superb achieved five stars.

The Superb’s equipment is structured across several levels: Confort, Ambition, Elegance and Executive. From the base trim we already get a two-zone climate control, on-board computer, 16″ steel wheels and a CD-MP3 radio, while the next trim level adds alloy wheels and bi-xenon headlights. The Elegance trim adds, on top of the above, a touchscreen CD-MP3 radio, 17″ wheels and front and rear parking sensors, while the top equipment level adds 18″ wheels, a sunroof, pre-wiring for a phone, hill start assist, among other features.

In short, from the base trim the Superb comes fairly complete. Even so, some optional extras were fitted to our test unit, such as the touchscreen navigation system and electric leather seats. The navigation system (1,375 euros) stood out for its good performance, as it integrates navigation, audio and telephony functions. As a curiosity (typical of the VAG Group), it has a slot for an SD card but does not accept USB; it is an outdated form of connectivity but does its job well, and the system also includes an internal hard drive.

Using the navigation screen we also had a parking assistant that is quite practical, graphically showing the distance while parking. It is an extra (550 euros), but for a car of these dimensions it is worth it. On the other hand, the bi-xenon lights come as standard from the Ambition trim, and it is welcome that you do not have to pay extra for something like this, which provides excellent illumination and, in addition, they are steerable.

Overall Assessment

For 37,570 euros (price according to the online configurator) you get a Superb Combi with everything, from the navigation system to leather, including bi-xenon lights, the boot with all its accessories and a 170 CV diesel engine with six-speed DSG automatic gearbox. It is a price that says it all about the model, and if we look at similar models in terms of equipment or space, it is practically impossible to find one that matches it in price, equipment or space. And if we also take into account that a Superb Combi starts at 20,400 euros, we have price and interior space as two major strengths.

After driving the Superb Combi, I have realised that it is a very valid alternative to traditional saloons, including the Passat. The only drawback is that we must forget the badge snobbery that still exists today in some people. Because the Superb Combi is a representative saloon whichever way you look at it, and at bargain prices with sufficient quality both in its range of engines (from the VAG Group) and in its design and interior quality.

Honestly, few drawbacks can be found in this model. In terms of behaviour, the engine responds very well and maintains quite low consumption, the DSG gearbox is a winning choice if you are looking for comfort (approx. 2,000 euros), and as for the handling of this estate, it has no major noticeable flaws either. Inside we find quality materials; there are hard plastics in some areas, but the overall finish is correct, although its design is quite sober (that is already a matter of taste).

And finally, in terms of equipment, as standard we have a whole arsenal of safety features and standard elements such as the climate control or the bi-xenon headlights (from the Ambition trim onwards), equipment that can be complemented with a good selection of extras. Perhaps this is one of the drawbacks, since even heated seats are an extra, but with details like the umbrella holder it gives the car a distinctive touch.

In short, if you are looking for an estate that prioritises space, with a well-known and powerful 170 CV diesel engine, and you want it with good standard equipment without going too far over budget, the Superb Combi is an interesting option, measuring up to other estates derived from mid-size saloons, with a certain premium air in its equipment and finishes.
