Slot extreme: the madness of wingcars

Wingcars are the ultimate specialty of slot car racing, with cars that accelerate up to 160 km/h and reach 100 km/h in the blink of an eye (literally).

What I’m going to show you is the pinnacle of slot car racing, wingcars. And the truth is that the extremes these cars reach are worth seeing; a few figures as an example of what I mention: loaded with aerodynamic accessories scaled to the car (1:24), these beasts can reach 160 km/h (no, I haven’t added an extra zero), they can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 0.3 seconds, and their tiny motors spin at around 300,000 RPM per minute, at 16 volts.

As you’ll see in the video after the jump, racing these slot cars is not easy. Following the car on the track is next to impossible without much practice. In every crash, spectacular by the way, the race has to be stopped. Falls to the ground and burnt-out motors are commonplace, and I have seen track marshals wearing helmets so they don’t get a ticket for a head injury caused by a flying wingcar… Want to see slot wingcars in action? The video you’ll watch took place during the 2010 European Wingcar Championship and is pretty much mind-blowing.
