Spain: Barcelona is the city with the most traffic jams

A study carried out by the Dutch company TomTom has revealed that the city with the most traffic jams in Europe is Brussels, while in Spain Barcelona takes the top spot for the town that causes the most traffic jams every day.

Although I admit that patience is not one of my greatest virtues, the traffic jams that Spanish cities experience day after day drive even the most experienced urban driver up the wall. The reason is given by a study which indicates that more than 1 million people are caught in traffic jams every day.

This study, carried out by TomTom, analysed traffic data from European municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. The European city whose drivers endure the most traffic jams is Brussels, while the Spanish city that ranks highest on this list is Barcelona, in 23rd place.

The Spanish towns that follow Barcelona are Valencia, Alicante, Toledo, Albacete, Zaragoza, Murcia and Elche. In Barcelona, 25% of time spent behind the wheel is lost to traffic jams.

As for Madrid, the statistics say that people spend 57 hours a year stuck in traffic, which causes losses of 800 million euros.

The study does not say this, but it is to be expected that the departments in charge of traffic and urban planning in these towns will do much more than fine the long-suffering Spanish driver left and right.
