Spy photos of the Fiat 500 convertible

Spy photos of the new Fiat 500 Cabrio have reached us from AutoWeek. The 500 Cabrio version will not be a conventional convertible; instead it will be a targa-style roof (just like the Citroën C3 Pluriel).

The targa-style roof is made of canvas, but it slides between fixed pillars. This saves weight compared with the traditional system, while keeping the essence of the brand and, above all, of the model.

The Fiat 500 Cabrio will remain as customisable as the current 500, allowing buyers, among other options, to choose the colour of the canvas roof or the model’s current personalisation features.

For now, according to reports, testing is focusing on cabin soundproofing, and this Cabrio version of the Fiat 500 is expected to be unveiled by summer 2009.
