SsangYong Torres: the long-awaited mid-size SUV makes its debut in its home country

SsangYong’s new SUV has just debuted in Korea with a very attractive look, highly advanced equipment, and an electric version will follow

Ssangyong Torres

After several teasers published by the brand itself last May, the new SsangYong Torres has just been officially unveiled in its home country, sporting a design that has pleasantly surprised us, a highly technological and advanced interior with quality materials, and a mechanical range that will include a fully electric version later on.

With all this, the new SsangYong Torres has the crucial mission of revitalising sales of the Korean brand, which has been going through a difficult economic situation for some time. To do so, this new SUV has been developed under the brand’s new design language called Powered by Toughness.

Robust and muscular

Focusing more on the design of this new model, the front of the new SsangYong Torres offers an aggressive gaze and a very robust image, with slim LED light units of angular shapes, a muscular bonnet, a large grille and a bumper with a lower protector to complete its front view.

Turning 90 degrees, we find alloy wheels of up to 20 inches, fairly pronounced wheel arches surrounded by several plastic protectors in the purest SUV style, and a C-pillar where a side storage box can be fitted on the right side only.

At the rear, the new SsangYong features LED tail lights that remind us of those of the Ford Explorer. Its bumper also has a lower protector practically identical to the front one, and the tailgate incorporates a cover with the Torres lettering that resembles the recess of a spare wheel.

A high level of connectivity

Stepping inside, we find extensive technological equipment, with a touchscreen for the 12.3-inch infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen located below the infotainment screen for controlling the climate system.

In addition to this technological equipment, the Torres offers room for up to five occupants and features leather-upholstered seats, as well as its multifunction steering wheel and dashboard, and several aluminium inserts that give it a quite premium look, plus a boot offering an impressive capacity of 703 litres.

Its mechanical range

As for the mechanical side, the new SsangYong Torres has been presented with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder T-GDi petrol engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive, although an all-wheel-drive system is also offered as an option.

The brand has announced that this new model will arrive in Europe at the end of 2023, accompanied by a fully electric version as the flagship of its range on the old continent, at a price that has yet to be confirmed.
