Steering wheel with touchscreen tested in Germany

A steering wheel featuring a touchscreen that can control the car’s essential functions and accessories is being researched at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
The steering wheel incorporates an acrylic touchscreen, powered by infrared LEDs and a camera that tracks hand movements across the screen. Supposedly, practising these movements on the wheel will not distract drivers, since everything is done almost without thinking and without taking your hands off the wheel…
The project also envisages attaching this system to a HUD display so the driver does not have to devote attention to fiddling with the controls on the dashboard and can stay focused on driving. I wonder how many of these gadgets we will see in the years to come, and how many of them will have a truly useful purpose in everyday life.
