Ten reasons to switch to LPG

Liquefied Petroleum Gas, better known as LPG or Autogas, is becoming an alternative fuel that is gaining ground in the market. To help convince you, we give you ten reasons to switch to LPG.

The number of LPG vehicle registrations has, in just eight months, surpassed those recorded throughout last year. Now, we want to give you ten reasons to switch to LPG. So if the idea of changing your car is on your mind, it is worth considering this type of fuel.

These vehicles are fitted with a tank for Liquefied Petroleum Gas alongside the conventional petrol tank. When the LPG runs out, the car runs on petrol. Moreover, you can not only buy a new vehicle powered by this fuel, but also convert an existing one, provided it has indirect or multipoint injection and complies with Euro 3 emissions standards.

It is also a very good alternative for those who, for the time being, are reluctant about hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric technologies. But first of all, what is Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG? It is an alternative fuel normally made up of a mixture of butane and propane. In vehicles it is stored at very high pressure and in liquid form.

Ten reasons to switch to LPG

First of all, it is important to point out that it is a clean fuel that offers a fair range, since petrol stations can now be found every 20-30 kilometres. There is also a mobile app called GasLicuado which, if the driver enters the route, informs them of the location of the petrol stations that supply this gas.

Moreover, more and more manufacturers are backing LPG versions. At first it was introduced by Italian brands, but today many offer it. Why choose an LPG-adapted vehicle?

GLP

1. Liquefied Petroleum Gas, or LPG, has become the most economical fuel on the market thanks to its tax advantages. Autogas is roughly 50% cheaper than petrol. Currently this fuel is available at a price between 0.699 euros and 0.723 euros per litre, which represents a significant saving. If you drive around 15,000 kilometres a year, the user could save more than 560 euros a year.

2. As far as maintenance is concerned, it is much cheaper. This is due to low breakdown rates and the longer engine life, since wear is much lower.

3. The refuelling time is practically the same as when refuelling petrol or diesel, so the user will not lose hours getting the vehicle back on the road.

4. Because they carry the ECO label, they are exempt from paying the registration tax, so users save between 4.75% and 14.95% of the vehicle’s base price, depending on the CO2 emissions it is approved for.

5. LPG-powered vehicles help to reduce pollution in our cities: their CO2 emissions are comparable to those of diesel vehicles and up to 15% lower than petrol ones, NOx emissions are up to 80% lower than diesel, and they emit practically no particulates.

6. LPG reduces noise levels by 50% compared with diesel, and it also makes the engine respond more smoothly.

7. These vehicles can use the BUS-HOV lane in high-occupancy scenarios even when the required number of passengers is not met. In addition, the environmental label allows these vehicles to circulate during high-pollution episodes and to enter low-emission zones in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona.

8.– The LPG system is perfectly integrated into the vehicle; for example, the LPG fuel tank is fully housed in the spare wheel well or in the boot if the user decides to fit a larger range option.

9. The vehicle has greater range, up to 500 km on LPG, to which the normal range of the petrol tank is added. This comes with a lower cost per kilometre.

10. Burning LPG leaves no residue, giving the lubricant and the engine great longevity. In addition, engine durability is further increased thanks to specially reinforced and hardened valves.
