BMW is developing a new high-performance V8 engine that will debut in the next M5 CS
The future BMW M5 CS could feature a new, evolved high-performance V8 engine that would be more aggressive than the one in the current BMW M5 Competition.

According to reports, BMW is reportedly working on a new V8 engine, which is surprising to say the least, given the industry’s push toward electrification. But apparently the Bavarian company’s plan for an electrifying future includes eight-cylinder engines.
According to BMWBlog, the German automaker will unveil this new engine within 2-3 years; It won’t be an entirely new engine, but rather a very thorough update of the current S63 unit used in several M models, including the BMW M5.

With the internal code “S68”, the new V8 unit could offer a smaller displacement than the current 4.4 liters, which seems plausible given that markets such as China penalize engines above 4.0 liters with heavier taxes.
However, it will keep things like the twin-turbo setup, with the turbos located inside the engine’s “V”. We have already heard that BMW plans to combine inline six-cylinder engines with electric motors, but the same is expected to be applied to the new S68 V8 unit to meet future emissions regulations. It remains to be seen whether it will be a mild hybrid setup or a fully developed plug-in hybrid.

The future BMW M5 CS will feature a new high-performance V8 engine
The same report cites sources saying that this new BMW M V8 could debut for the first time under the hood of the BMW M5 CS model, an even faster and more aggressive version of the super saloon that will sit above the current BMW M5 Competition.
The rumored BMW M5 CS is said to feature more weight-saving measures and even more firepower than the 625 CV currently offered by the BMW M5 Competition. With the facelifted version of the BMW M5 debuting next year, we won’t have to wait long before more information comes out.

Information is still scarce at this point and not much is known about it. Apparently, the new engine codenamed S68 will be more of a drastic update of the S63 than anything else. It will remain a twin-turbo setup and will also keep the ‘hot V’ configuration alive. However, it could be smaller in size and, more importantly, it could feature some side electrification.
The development of a new high-performance V8 is surprising news, especially since we know for certain that many of the upcoming hybrid models will combine six cylinders with electric motors to achieve incredible power figures. However, for some high-performance cars built under the M umbrella, a proper V8 may be necessary. The same could be said about electrifying that power source, so that it complies with future legislation. That could be the first car to use the S68 engine once it comes out. In the meantime, we’ll look at the facelift for the BMW M5 F90 launched next year with a redesigned look.
