The next vehicle from the American brand, the Model Y, will be a compact SUV built on a completely new platform.

Tesla has released the first image in the form of a teaser of its upcoming electric compact SUV, which will be named Model Y. The image was unveiled at the 2017 annual shareholders’ meeting of Tesla held at the Computer History Museum (Mountain View, California).

Originally, Tesla planned to build its first compact SUV on the same platform as the Model 3, but Elon Musk, CEO of the American company, has revealed the change of plans and announced that the vehicle will be developed on a completely new platform. Musk also stated that this platform would be ready for production by late 2019 or early 2020.

Regarding the new architecture of the upcoming Model Y, Elon Musk assured that Tesla will get rid of the 12-volt battery. This means that there will be no more lead-acid batteries and a new propulsion system will be used in its upcoming cars in order to reduce wiring and simplify the production process. Musk added that “Gigafactory 1” will be in charge of producing the battery packs for the new Model Y, but that the company will create a new factory with the most automated production lines.

Tesla is moving towards a car without rear-view mirrors, but current road safety regulations do not allow it. Just as they did with the Model 3, Tesla will keep revealing information about the features its upcoming SUV will offer, but for now they have only released a teaser showing the lines of the vehicle’s front end.

The image does not show many features of the model, but from what we can see it could have an appearance similar to that of the Model 3. What draws the most attention in the teaser image of the Model Y is that the company intends to eliminate the rear-view mirrors, something it has tried to introduce since the launch of the Model X, but road regulations still do not permit this.

At the annual shareholders’ meeting of Tesla, Musk highlighted the company’s intention to make the upcoming Model Y even more popular than the recent Model 3.
