Tesla loses steam in Europe against Volkswagen and Stellantis
Sales of Tesla are falling, while brands such as Volkswagen and Stellantis have placed their models among the best-sellers in European markets during 2022.

Europe has to take a big step forward when it comes to marketing electric vehicles. It is time for electric mobility to keep growing, and that is why we need to think about having more cars of this type. The brands’ offer keeps expanding, so it is no surprise that the models being sold keep changing constantly. Europe has seen a significant shift, one that could become a trend.
The electric vehicles marketed by Volkswagen were the best-selling ones during the second quarter of 2022 in European markets. Behind them are those sold under the umbrella of Stellantis. In third place is the brand that is identified with electric cars worldwide, Tesla.

Electric vehicle sales figures in Europe
It should be noted that Volkswagen sold 116,307 electric vehicles, while Stellantis added 105,413 battery-powered cars. Tesla fell to 78,277 units sold, a figure well below the results of the other two brands. For Tesla, the shutdown of factories in China has been a more than relevant reason for not reaching its expected sales.

As for Stellantis, the best-selling model has been the FIAT 500 electric, which also holds that position in Italy and Germany. Sales of this small electric city car have reached 32,315 units, representing a 72% increase over the same period in 2021.
Another important model for Stellantis has been the Peugeot e-208, which added 21,918 units during the first half of 2002, 11% more than in the first half of 2021. This model was the best-seller in France. Following these, the Opel Corsa-e is Stellantis’ third best-selling electric model, with 13,380 units sold.
Regarding Tesla, the main cause of the drop in sales of its models has been the closure of Chinese factories, which have caused a fall in sales. Even so, interest in its cars remains very high. In fact, the best-selling electric car in this first half has been the Tesla Model Y, with 39,969 units sold. This model is followed by the Model 3, with 38,280 units.
It is expected that, with the COVID crisis also overcome in China, Tesla will recover its sales levels during the second half of 2022. What is clear is that, although it is very slow, the growth in electric vehicle sales does not stop and is consolidating, despite the poor overall sales figures.
