According to the magazine CAR, Tesla is currently engaged in negotiations with major brands to collaborate on developing electric systems with reasonable prices for use in new city cars, but executives at the American company also state that a new SUV and a saloon with coupé-style design are being prepared based on the future Model S.

The Model S is a plug-in hybrid saloon that is being finalised by Tesla for launch on the market in 2010, and it will be very important for the brand, as it will be a model aimed at a broader customer base than the Roadster, thanks to a considerably lower price due to the use of steel instead of aluminium, and greater versatility.

If the SUV and the other saloon projects are approved, they would join the Roadster and the Model S in 2015, although Tesla will by then have needed to find more efficient and durable alternatives to its current batteries to adapt them for the new models.

According to rumours circulating, the brands with which Tesla could be working are Daimler and Chrysler, which would not be so unlikely given the battery problems of the former, and the urgent need to find solutions to the difficult situation the latter is currently going through.
