Tesla stops supporting Steam video games in new Model S and X

New owners of a Model S or Model X will no longer be able to make good use of the time spent charging their vehicle’s battery pack by enjoying their favourite Steam video games.

Tesla has begun informing its customers, before delivering their new vehicles, that both the Model S and the Model X will no longer have support for Steam games from now on. A feature that was introduced with great fanfare on these two models from the North American manufacturer in December 2022.

For anyone who isn’t quite sure what we’re talking about, Steam is a video game platform with hundreds of titles available, to which current owners of the Model S and Model X have access when the vehicle is stationary, paying the cost of each video game they want to play, obviously.

New owners of a Model S or X will not, however, be able to enjoy Steam games in the same way as everyone else. In a communication sent prior to delivery, Tesla is informing them that the gaming features of their new vehicle are limited by default and indefinitely. The message that Tesla is sending to its customers reads as follows:

“Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model S/X, and your vehicle will no longer be able to play Steam games. All other entertainment features and apps will nevertheless remain unchanged.”

The removal of Steam from the new Model S/X has taken everyone by surprise

After receiving these messages, many prospective owners of a Model S/X have turned to Reddit forums to voice their frustration and check whether other customers of the North American company had received the same message. Among the comments on Reddit about this issue, there is much speculation about the reasons that may have led Tesla to take this decision.

Some users suggest that the removal of Steam could be due to infrequent use of this feature, which may already have been forgotten by many current owners of these two Premium models from the North American manufacturer. Others, however, believe it could be the result of problems with the gaming experience or the high energy consumption of the vehicle’s battery that it generates. In any case, it is all speculation because Tesla has not, so far, offered any explanation on the matter.

Many people thought that the integration of Steam was merely a first step that would eventually lead the company to offer more entertainment options during journeys in the future, especially considering Tesla’s vision of developing robotaxis and a complete autonomous driving system. However, it appears that the American manufacturer has finally decided to take a different direction.
