The 2012/2013 Christmas Operation has begun

Since three in the afternoon yesterday, the DGT has begun an operation to monitor the heavy flow of end-of-year journeys that fill our roads at this time of year. The 2012/2013 Christmas Operation will be carried out in three phases, coinciding with the Christmas, New Year and Epiphany celebrations.
The first phase has already begun at three in the afternoon yesterday and will end at midnight on Tuesday 25 December. The second phase will run from Friday 28 December until 1 January 2013. The third and final part of the Christmas operation will begin on Friday 4 January and end at midnight on Monday 7 January, a day that will be a public holiday in all regions except Galicia, La Rioja, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community
DGT estimates indicate that a total of around 16 million vehicle movements by road will take place, both short and long distance. Traffic checks will step up operations on drink-driving and speed checks, in order to prevent accidents over these dates.
The number of Traffic officers and staff from other areas taking part in these operations is not small: around 600 Traffic officials, 10,000 agents of the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil and more than 13,000 employees of road maintenance companies and emergency services staff, both health and firefighting, will take part.
