The best hybrid car of 2019: buying guide

The environmental and legal situation makes it worth looking into which is the best hybrid car of 2019

This year, along with 2018, stands out as one of the most notable in terms of sales of hybrid vehicles, both full and plug-in hybrids, which have surged at breakneck speed up the new car sales rankings.

That is why, during this year, the best hybrid cars of 2019 will offer a leap forward in both sustainability and technology when it comes to the electric systems supporting combustion engines.

Among the best hybrid cars of 2019, the following stand out for their innovation, their quality or the interest they arouse:

Hybrid car of 2019: Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Toyota Corolla SedanThe renowned Toyota Corolla Hybrid of 2019 will be one of the most popular bets, both for the Japanese brand and for customers.

A hybrid car capable of performing city car or long-distance estate duties thanks to its different body styles. Thus, the versions of the Toyota Corolla Hybrid as a compact hybrid, saloon or touring allow the choice to be tailored to the needs of the buyer looking for one of the most attractive hybrid cars of 2019 in terms of value for money.

The starting price of the Toyota Corolla Hybrid begins at 21,300 euros for the saloon variant.

Hybrid car of 2019: BMW 330e

BMW 330eThe BMW 3 Series variant among the hybrid cars of 2019, marketed as the BMW 330e, is updated with the arrival of the new BMW 3 Series.

For this reason, the appeal of this electrified version lies not only in its styling but in its figures: with a total output of 184 CV, the average combined homologated consumption is quantified at just 1.7 litres of petrol per 100 km, and it offers an electric-mode range of up to 60 km.

Although the price of the BMW 330e has not yet been announced, as a premium saloon it will not place this car among the cheapest hybrid cars, but it will allow it to compete with high-end vehicles. We expect the cost to be above the 38,600 euros from which the range of the new BMW 3 Series starts.

Hybrid car of 2019: Mercedes-Benz E-Class DE

But if, in addition to a saloon, the preferred fuel is diesel, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class DE is the diesel hybrid car to choose.

Thanks to the combination of the 194 CV four-cylinder turbo engine with the 122 CV electric motor, this hybrid diesel luxury saloon delivers up to 306 CV and 700 Nm of torque, capable of a kick similar to or greater than its siblings developed by Mercedes-AMG.

A hybrid car of 2019 since the first deliveries began in January.

Hybrid car of 2019: Peugeot 508 Hybrid

Peugeot 508 HybridAnd if there is a saloon that arouses great interest among the best hybrid cars of 2019 for its balance of quality and price, it is the new Peugeot 508 Hybrid.

If the new Peugeot 508 represents a step forward for Peugeot, especially in terms of exterior appeal and the recovery of quality standards in its interior, the electrified option increases the interest of those who, either sensitised to polluting emissions or because of environmental restrictions, such as the application of restricted zones like Madrid Centro, see the new Peugeot 508 plug-in hybrid as a purchase option.

A Peugeot 508 Hybrid that can be an alternative between the aforementioned Toyota Corolla Hybrid and the BMW 330e. This Peugeot 508 Hybrid could compete directly with the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Saloon and Touring bodies and, as a traditional car, with the BMW 330e, pending a Touring version as well.

Hybrid car of 2019: Subaru Forester e-Boxer

It was first presented in the United States, several months later, on the occasion of the Geneva Motor Show, Subaru officially announced its arrival on the old continent with the e-Boxer engines; the marketing, at last, of hybrid versions in the Subaru range will open the possibility of expanding sales.

In fact, the first models that Subaru will sell within the group of hybrid cars of 2019 will be the crossover, the Subaru XV e-Boxer and the family off-roader, the Subaru Forester e-Boxer.

This latter model, the Subaru Forester e-Boxer, will compete against hybrid off-roaders such as the new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, or more urban SUVs with off-road attitude such as the new Honda CR-V Hybrid.

Hybrid car of 2019: Honda CR-V Hybrid

Honda CR-V HybridThe fact is that, since we were able to carry out the road test of the Honda CR-V Hybrid, we knew that the arrival of an electrified version would boost the model’s sales among the SUVs of 2019.

A vehicle that, as we noted, could act as a crossover with off-road pretensions, not only thanks to its engine with a total output of 184 CV but because of the 4×4 configuration. Under standard driving conditions, the rear axle disconnects the transmission; the all-wheel drive system is activated when needed, delivering a split of up to 40-60.

The price of the Honda CR-V Hybrid rises to 41,900 euros, a cost that could be reduced by brand discounts or official aid such as the MOVES Plan.

Hybrid car of 2019: Ford Kuga

This brand-new SUV marks a new chapter for crossovers from the brand with the oval logo, thanks to the technological innovations this car brings to the model and, above all, to the brand’s immediate future.

The new Ford Kuga will be sold, in addition to diesel and petrol engines, as a mild hybrid, as a full hybrid, although not until 2020, and also as a Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid, the latter with up to 40 km of electric-mode range and available from the start of its sales.

Hybrid car of 2019: DS7 Crossback e-Tense

The DS7 Crossback is one of the most beautiful vehicles currently on sale. This SUV seeks, with its styling and design, an extra dose of appeal that is underlined by an interior that lacks not the slightest detail. Reason enough to be included among the best hybrid cars of 2019.

A crossover whose main drawback could be its exclusive commercialisation with combustion engines. For this reason, the arrival in 2019 of a DS 7 Crossback plug-in hybrid could not only allow it to display the DGT ECO label but also place it among the most desirable cars.

Hybrid car of 2019: Lexus UX 250h

nuevo lexus ux 250hThe Lexus UX 250h is one of the most desired cars of 2019 and, consequently, one of the best hybrid cars of 2019 that arouses the most interest.

Be that as it may, it is true that this crossover was presented in 2018 and opened its order books from October of the previous year, but, given the great demand it generated, the car suffered delays, with the first units not arriving until this March.

A new car that, as we noted in the road test of the Lexus UX 250h, in Premium and F-Sport trim, meets expectations and which, thanks to its configuration as 4×2 or 4×4 and up to five different trim levels, can be a great purchase option, even though the cheapest Lexus UX 250h starts at 33,900 euros in the ECO trim.

Hybrid car of 2019: Volvo S60 Twin Engine

Volvo S60The range of the new Volvo S60 has landed this year with two plug-in hybrid variants: the T6 Twin Engine and the T8 Twin Engine. As is to be expected from a Swedish brand car, this is a premium model that comes to look eye to eye with other members of the list of best hybrids of 2019, such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class DE.

The Volvo S60 T6 Twin Engine combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, so the combined output is 335 horsepower and it offers 590 Nm of torque. In addition, this model has an electric range of 50 kilometres.

Finally, we have the Volvo S60 T8 Twin Engine, which uses the same configuration as the “smaller” variant, although this time it offers a total output of 400 horsepower.

Both options are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and feature an all-wheel drive system. With all this, both versions declare an average consumption that should not exceed 2 litres per 100 kilometres.
