The Citroën DS4 gets the ETG6 gearbox

Citroën has announced the introduction of the new automated gearbox in the range of its premium compact, the DS4. In this way, the French manufacturer caters to the demand of drivers who are more carefree or who simply don’t like the clutch.

For the time being, it can only be combined with the 1.6 e-HDi Airdream diesel engine producing 115 CV, making it one of the most eco-friendly alternatives in the entire DS4 range.

The new ETG6 transmission replaces the outdated CMP6, a gearbox that was very popular within the French manufacturer but never fully managed to iron out all its shortcomings. The CMP6 has always been famous for its lack of “smoothness” when manoeuvring at low speeds, and its abruptness when shifting between gears. On the other hand, the CMP6 has always enjoyed advantages over other automatic transmissions, such as the simplicity of its mechanics or the lower price of the whole package.

With the new ETG6, Citroën wants to keep the previous benefits while increasing comfort and driving pleasure. To this end, the French brand has developed new software that includes, among other things, a specific mapping for low-speed manoeuvres, smoothing the transitions between gears and simulating the “creep” effect that other gearboxes have.
In addition, the ETG6, combined with the Start&Stop system, allows the DS4 e-HDi to be homologated with emissions of 110 g per kilometre driven, which exempts it from paying the registration tax.
