The DGT installs 29 new cameras to detect traffic violations on the roads

Spanish roads, motorways and highways are now covered by nearly 250 DGT cameras, after 29 new devices were installed.

Spanish roads are covered with traffic cameras whose function is to ensure compliance with traffic rules. These cameras are responsible for checking that drivers wear their seat belts, do not use a mobile phone, and do not carry out any activity that distracts the driver.

Currently there are 216 cameras of this type in place, which monitor traffic and driving. In addition, these devices automatically identify violations and issue the corresponding fines. These are accompanied by several photos of the violation and the number plate. The number plate identifies the vehicle owner, who then receives the penalty.

If the driver is someone other than the owner, the owner must identify the driver. The cameras also provide additional information such as the location of the camera, the date and the time when the violation was detected. With all this data, the penalty is valid.

With the addition of these new cameras, the total number of these rises to 245 units. These cameras are usually installed on overhead gantries and help not only to increase road safety but also to record real-time traffic, accidents and other traffic conditions. And if an accident occurs within their range, it allows help to be mobilised in less time.

If the camera detects a violation such as using a mobile phone while driving, the fine rises to 200 euros and six points are deducted from the driving licence. This penalty came into force with the new Traffic Law and joins another very common violation, not wearing a seat belt.

The new cameras have been placed at various points on motorways, highways and national roads. With these new cameras, control on these main roads is increased and the aim is to avoid risks on them. The full list of camera locations can be found on the DGT website, where you can check their location and traffic status in each area.
