The DGT suspends driving tests due to the coronavirus

The DGT has continued with the measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus and has decided to suspend driving tests

The coronavirus has grown into a global pandemic capable of suspending major events such as the Geneva Motor Show and keeping us at home to prevent infections.

Of course, the effects of the coronavirus have affected every sector, and the automotive industry has been hit hard. As is happening across all fields, vehicle sales are suffering these days, and those already closed are at risk, since cars may take much longer to arrive.

The DGT has also had to adapt its modus operandi, so the first measure it has taken directly affects young people who are getting their driving licence. The reason is that the body responsible for regulating traffic in our country has decided to suspend the theory and practical driving tests to avoid risks.Puntos carnet de conducir

Driving tests suspended due to coronavirus only affect three regions

For now, this suspension of tests does not affect all of Spain; instead, it will focus on the three provinces most affected by the coronavirus. Therefore, from 13 March 2020, theory and practical driving tests are suspended in the Community of Madrid, La Rioja and the province of Álava.

In this way, young people in these regions will have to wait a few days before they can apply our tips for passing the driving test after the DGT’s changes.

It seems that this is only the beginning of the DGT’s measures, and it is most likely that this postponement of driving tests will end up extending to more regions and may even cover the whole country.

In fact, it would not be surprising if the driving schools themselves moved ahead of this development, since just as educational centres have closed in several regions, driving schools should do the same.Cambios carnet de conducir

Fewer staff in DGT offices

The promotion of teleworking also extends to DGT offices, so in-person service at these locations will be considerably limited. Specifically, the body has stated that only “essential services, taking into account the particular needs of each of the affected offices” will be carried out in person.

This does not mean that there will be no service for carrying out any procedure, such as duplicating your vehicle registration document –don’t miss our report explaining how to do it-.

The DGT will provide telematic support for anyone who needs to make an enquiry or carry out a procedure, so that all questions will be resolved by telephone.
