With the aim of rejuvenating Spain’s car fleet, the DGT’s speed cameras will also be able to detect whether vehicles have passed the ITV or not, according to Javier Villalba, head of the DGT’s Regulations Unit.

Considering that more than 50% of vehicles in Spain are already over 9 years old, the DGT will carry out a series of measures to crack down on those who have not gone through ITV inspection stations. Among them, the cameras will serve to expose those who drive without an ITV or with an expired inspection, in addition to detecting breaches of speed limits.

As we reported a few days ago, the DGT is prepared to take off the road, if the case arises, those vehicles that, due to their age, pose a danger to other motorists. Among other measures, the DGT will send 13 million letters in the coming days to owners of vehicles more than ten years old, in which they will be warned of the risks of driving cars that are obsolete in terms of technology and safety mechanisms.

Let us recall that at the time some proposed banning private sales of vehicles more than 15 years old and removing from the road cars older than 30 years, measures whose recommendation was deemed “rather unfortunate”, to put it one way.
