The Ferrari 250 GTO has done it: it is officially a work of art

An Italian court has considered the Ferrari 250 GTO a work of art, and this means it cannot be copied or reproduced under any circumstances

There are legendary cars that transcend the automotive industry and that little by little become cultural icons. So much so that some companies set out to create copies of those models that are in everyone’s mind. Sometimes the brands themselves grant permits and cede the rights so that the designs can be shared and more or less faithful copies of those models can be made. With the Ferrari 250 GTO they have tried it, but Ferrari has been faster and has protected one of its most emblematic models.

When the Italian company discovered that a project was underway to manufacture replicas of the Ferrari 250 GTO, it filed a lawsuit before a court claiming ownership of the rights over the design and the intellectual property of the model. This way it could prevent one of its most remembered models from becoming the property of any company that wanted to work on those designs.

After a complicated process, the ruling gave the Ferrari 250 GTO a status that elevates it above any car we had known until now. The ruling considers the model a work of art, so it cannot be reproduced or imitated: it is unique and no one has the right to reproduce it in any way. A complete triumph for Ferrari, not only because it thereby protects the legacy of the brand, but also because its work has become art.

According to the court’s ruling, “the personalisation of the car’s lines and its aesthetic elements have made the 250 GTO unique, a true icon of the automobile”. This, together with the numerous awards it has received throughout its existence, has led them to consider it a work of art and, therefore, something unrepeatable.

Only 36 units of the Ferrari 250 GTO were built, although it has been quite common to come across copies made by various imitators. From now on, no copy of the model may be made, as it can be penalised and will constitute a fairly serious offence. To see how important this Ferrari model is, an original unit was recently sold for 48,404,000 dollars, which means that what they paid for it is, literally, more than its weight in gold. Quite something.
