The Ford Cortina of 2012 sparks the imagination

Auto Express shows us some curious sketches of a 2012 Ford Cortina. Of course Ford is not planning to bring back the Cortina, but it is a good excuse for the model’s 50th anniversary.

The Ford Cortina, a car that is more than representative for the British, has not had a redesigned model nor been revived, as it might seem. The design exercise we see here was done solely as an experiment by the editors of Auto Express. What would a 2012 Ford Cortina look like?

After presenting the idea, they asked none other than Ford Europe’s chief design officer to draw a 2012 Ford Cortina with modern lines, but without losing anything of the previous model. Paul Wraith has produced these drawings, a tribute to a car that was sold in the British Isles for 20 years and that turns 50 in 2012.

The Ford Cortina was the forerunner of other models that even had their moment in Spain in the 1970s and part of the 1980s. The Ford Taunus and the Granada are clear examples of the influence this British car had on Ford across much of Europe.
