Last year, around mid-year, we brought you the news of the start of production of the Ginetta G50, the flagship of this small British coachbuilder founded in 1958 and deeply involved in the semi-professional racing scene in Great Britain. Today we must report that the G50 has been cancelled for reasons that are easy to imagine: the ongoing economic crisis.

Engineers have concluded that the V6-powered model would become a very expensive car to produce, so they have moved to a model with a 1.8 Zetec engine producing “only” 150 hp, which has the advantage that the G40 would weigh just around 800 kg. Initially, the new, smaller model will be called G40 and is already being prepared for production, ahead of a future presentation on 14 to 17 January in Great Britain.

The shift towards a less powerful model with a smaller engine will not stop the brand from continuing to promote itself in the world of racing. Ginetta currently has its own category that serves as a stepping stone to the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), and the G40 will be eligible to compete in it.

As for the more powerful version, the unfinished G50, its complete removal from the brand’s plans has not been ruled out, as it could be reactivated in the future, bearing in mind that Ginetta’s aim is to compete in the market against Lotus, which looks quite difficult given the models offered by each manufacturer.
