The I-Pace arrives, the first fully electric Jaguar

Jaguar has dared to build a “concept car” that blends the SUV world with electric propulsion, which could be seen at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show

The Los Angeles Auto Show is already underway and attendees have been able to see the new models on display for American visitors. One of the cars that has drawn the attention of journalists is the new concept presented by Jaguar. It is a fully electric car, which has an SUV spirit and has been named I-Pace.

The first thing to point out is that it doesn’t look like a typical SUV. Its styling is closer to a compact car with off-road touches, so it is a little smaller than one might expect. Even so, it is a car that offers a completely new look for Jaguar, as it sits on a brand-new platform that eliminates one of the things the British brand usually offers. That is, there is no need for a large bonnet to hide a high-displacement engine.

Two motors power this car, one on the front axle and another on the rear. Each delivers 197 CV, which together gives a total output of 394 CV. Both are fed by energy stored in a 90 kWh battery supplied by LG Chem, which can be charged in two hours using the fast-charging system offered by the company. Unlike other manufacturers, Jaguar wants to move away from exclusivity at charging stations and intends to collaborate on their development, so it will share universal charging points.

The battery sits under the seats, which frees up interior space, and the vehicle’s five occupants will be very comfortable in the cabin. As for elements taken from other models in the brand’s range, the suspension is the same one used on the F-Pace. So, although this is a completely new model that draws on technologies developed specifically for it, it relies on the brand’s extensive technical experience.

The car could move into production to be ready by 2018, but for now we have to make do with seeing the concept model and waiting to see what changes will be made when it goes into production. Shall we look at the photos and you tell us what you think?
