The ICS system from Toyota will prevent 70% of accidents

Car manufacturers focus a large share of their profits on research and studies into new systems that can reduce accidents. This is the case of Toyota’s ICS, which promises to cut low-speed accidents caused by pedal errors by up to 70%.

Reducing and eliminating road traffic accidents is the goal of today’s society and of car manufacturers, who work to make driving as safe as possible, through research and studies such as those carried out by Toyota.

The safety of a vehicle and the systems or aids it has to guarantee it are undoubtedly a factor that can tip a buyer’s decision towards one model or another. The Japanese manufacturer knows this well: it spent 18 months analysing the accidents involving three of its models sold in Japan, the Alphard, Vellfire and Prius, while parking, and concluded that the system they are fitted with, the Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS), has helped reduce mishaps and collisions with adjacent objects.

This system consists of the use of a sonar, an acoustic location system that detects obstacles the vehicle could collide with. If a collision is imminent, the system can even brake the car to avoid it or, at least, reduce its consequences. In addition, it will prevent the car from hitting an obstacle if it pulls away suddenly due to a pedal error.

It is estimated that pedal errors would fall by 70%, and incidents associated with reversing the vehicle by 40%. You can see how the system works in the following video.

In this way, Toyota demonstrates its commitment to road safety, advancing the development of safer vehicles and technologies based on its Integrated Safety Management Concept.
