The Ineos Grenadier wants to switch to hydrogen and will test a prototype with a fuel cell
Although the Ineos Grenadier has not yet been launched with a combustion engine, the brand wants to take a step further and test the hydrogen fuel cell.

Some entrepreneurs want to bring about serious changes in the automotive market, and for that reason they propose prototypes that aim to update existing concepts. For example, we know that the Ineos Grenadier wants to become the ultimate off-roader and surpass those currently on the market. An off-roader that can tackle any type of terrain with great ease, powered by diesel and petrol engines.
But, as I have mentioned, they want to offer more to their buyers. So the company is working on a prototype powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. This model is not yet developed, but they are preparing the first steps to take so that what they consider the best off-roader in the world switches to clean mobility even before it enters the market with combustion engines.

Zero-emission prototype in 2022
The first prototype of the Ineos Grenadier will be ready by the end of 2022. It will be ready thanks to the collaboration with the engineering company AVL, which has also collaborated with Ford. In the case of the cooperation with the American company, they have developed a hydrogen fuel cell traction system for the commercial vehicles of Ford. Specifically, they are working on the Ford Transit, which will serve as the test vehicle for the entire range.
Ineos has also joined Hyundai to share development and technologies related to the hydrogen propulsion system. So they will be able to benefit from all the new developments related to this type of technology. So it will be relatively easy to obtain a Ineos Grenadier powered by this type of clean fuel in a fairly short time.
For Jim Ratcliffe, owner of Ineos, electric vehicles are very good for short journeys and daily use, but for longer trips or the terrains the Grenadier must cross, a hydrogen-based traction system is more suitable. Thus, this step could allow several brands with this type of extreme terrain in their range to offer this kind of vehicle with a hydrogen fuel cell. But, of course, to get there, a solid infrastructure of supply points is needed.
The Ineos Grenadier with a combustion engine will be ready in July 2022, so we will have to wait a little longer to see the hydrogen-powered off-roader. Although, of course, it will be quite an event and we will be able to enjoy everything it will offer in just over a year.
