The Italian government asks Fiat to preserve its factories
Italy’s Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Maurizio Sacconi, said in an interview that Fiat must uphold its commitment to boosting car production in the country, directly referring to the statement made by the head of the Italian consortium last week.
The Italian government has summoned Fiat and the unions to resume talks on 28 July. According to the minister’s statements, the manufacturer is expected to guarantee full production at its factories in Italy, and he added that the future of the country regarding its ability to remain a manufacturing base is at stake.
On the other hand, a rumour circulating online over the weekend suggested that Fiat could set up a new company to employ the workers who accept its labour terms. In any case, we will need to stay alert and wait for a response from the Italian consortium.
