The latest cars to undergo Euro NCAP tests receive different scores, and some even lower their ratings

The latest Euro NCAP crash tests have featured the BMW Series 1, Series 3, the Jeep Cherokee and the new Peugeot 208 at the test facilities

The new generations of the compact and the saloon from BMW have gone through the Euro NCAP test bench, the independent agency, though backed by the European Union, that serves as a benchmark for compliance with the safety standards offered by cars manufactured and sold within the European market.

These tests, to which the produced units are subjected, simulate different types of collisions whose results are analysed and evaluated in order to classify vehicles and draw up lists of the best cars in Euro NCAP tests.

Five stars out of five say it all. With a protection level of 97 percent for adult occupants and 87 percent for child occupants, and with protection for pedestrians in the event of a collision, the new BMW Series 3 receives the highest recognition that places it among the group of cars that have obtained the best ratings this year.

Five stars is also the rating received by the entry-level compact from BMW, the Series 1 with the 118i engine, although with a lower percentage in terms of occupant protection for adults. With very similar figures elsewhere, it achieves the maximum rating, just like the brand’s saloon.

The Jeep Cherokee improves in Euro NCAP, but drops in excellence

The new Jeep Cherokee earns a very good rating in its tests, but this means a drop in safety quality since, compared with the 2013 version, which scored 5 stars in the Euro NCAP tests, the 2019 model achieves 4.

With a reduction across all the criteria assessed compared with the previous generation, four stars is a high rating but shows shortcomings, for example with regard to pedestrian vulnerability.

A similar case occurs with the new Peugeot 208. The 2012 version achieved 5 stars whereas the new one gets 4. It is true that protection for adult and child occupants has increased, but its ability to protect pedestrians and cyclists has been reduced.

Following these four latest Euro NCAP tests, the list of cars that have passed through the test bench has been updated, and we are pleased that the bulk of vehicles achieving the best ratings is growing. Fortunately, none of the latest vehicles have joined the group of the worst Euro NCAP cars that you can find in the article we link to.
