The Mercedes Class E boosts its power with a 48-volt turbocharged engine

Several versions of the Mercedes Class E get the 48-volt mild-hybrid technology engine, which improves its performance and generates the extra electricity

Mercedes is preparing its models for the arrival of 2018, but if there is one thing we can highlight about the Mercedes Class E, it is well hidden under the bonnet. On the outside we can find some important changes that improve its presence, and even the interior has been reworked to offer greater comfort and a more elegant look. But it is the engine that has received the biggest change, as it has been replaced to incorporate the new 48-volt technology, which makes it an almost hybrid car.

The new 2.0-litre turbocharged engine features the 48-volt mild-hybrid system in the coupé and convertible versions of the E350, making it an even more spectacular car with higher performance. The EQ Booster starter-alternator helps at start-up, during acceleration, in braking energy recovery and at other moments when extra effort is required, helping to generate that bit of energy that means the engine does not have to provide that extra electricity.

The new powertrain fitted to these two versions of the E350 delivers a maximum output of 229 CV and 400 Nm of peak torque, allowing it to reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 5.9 seconds in the case of the coupé, and 6.1 seconds in the convertible. Its top speed, electronically limited, is 250 km/h, and consumption is rated at 6.7 litres per 100 km.

Apart from the engine, these cars carry a lot of technology that makes them very interesting. For example, an improved connectivity system has been incorporated, the Energizing package previously only available on the Class S models, and even an SMS alert system in case the car suffers any damage while parked, so the owner is always aware of the car’s integrity.

These innovations will also be introduced on the E220 and E220d versions in the very near future, and this engine and its variants will possibly be found in more models from the German brand, because the most immediate future of Mercedes seems to lie with this type of engine.
