The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2019 will arrive with twice the electric range

The new generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will arrive in 2019 with a renewed design and twice the range.

After 5 years on the market, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is one of the best-selling hybrid models on the European continent. With the aim of becoming the market leader in electrified SUVs, the brand has confirmed the arrival in 2019 of the new version of this famous model, which will feature twice the range of its predecessor.

Since its debut, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has surpassed 100,000 units sold, thanks especially to sales figures in Europe and Japan. The model is the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Europe.

It will be built on a new platform

For now we do not know the technical and styling specifications the model update will receive, but rumours indicate it will be a complete transformation. On the design table, the brand is considering the creation of a new platform and a significant increase in battery capacity that will allow the current electric-mode range to double, from 54 to more than 100 kilometres.

The current model has a 300-volt lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 12 kWh, with 80 cells delivering 54 kilometres of electric-only range.

One of the options that Mitsubishi could use for the new Outlander PHEV is the 25 kWh battery that achieves 120 kilometres of electric range and which the brand presented last year on the GT PHEV prototype at the Paris Motor Show.

Twice the range and a much more powerful propulsion system

Although the brand has not yet confirmed its future plans, these are not the only novelties. Sources at the Japanese company state that its new designs will feature a much more powerful propulsion system that will add acceleration and better performance to its electric and petrol engines. This configuration will also increase towing capacity, which could reach 2 tonnes.

But Mitsubishi could go a step further, as several rumours claim the Outlander could have a fully electric sibling with a larger-capacity battery.

According to the Japanese company, this new model will mark the start of an ambitious offensive that will see Mitsubishi offer a range of four electrified SUVs by 2020.
