Daimler’s Chinese subsidiary specialising in trucks and vans is preparing its move into electric mobility with a heavy-duty truck due in 2022

Fuso is one of the brands that Daimler has in the Chinese market and, being a company focused on the Asian market, it has been at the Tokyo Motor Show where it has presented its electric mobility proposals. It is a brand dedicated to manufacturing trucks, so its electric vehicles are aimed at transporting goods, both in large quantities and in smaller vehicles. To showcase its progress in this type of vehicle, a new brand has been created, E-Fuso, which will be the one to showcase the E-Fuso Vision One, a heavy-duty truck that was unveiled at the Japanese event.

This model will follow the path of the eCanter, which is already in production and whose main buyer has been UPS. This electric van is designed to be used in urban areas, since its battery does not give it enough range to travel between cities, around 100 kilometres. The new electric truck will begin production within the next four years, once all the necessary tests have been passed to begin commercial manufacturing.

The E-Fuso Vision One is a heavy-duty truck that will operate like a diesel truck, thanks to a 300 kWh battery that will provide a range of 350 kilometres. This distance will not allow transport between very distant cities, but it will be sufficient for journeys between nearby cities. Fuso knows that although electric cars are already a reality, heavy-duty electric trucks still have a long way to go, above all because of the battery issue.

Even so, E-Fuso wants to keep researching this technology and, as results are obtained and the range offered by batteries increases, apply it to extend the operating range of its trucks. In fact, although Fuso’s production of electric vehicles is still very small, the brand’s intention is to convert its entire range into electric vehicles, little by little, moving all models over to the E-Fuso brand.

To do so, they have the blessing of Daimler, which contributes all its experience with battery technology and charging systems. With this move, they will go up against Tesla, which also has a fully electric truck in the pipeline, whose presentation has been delayed twice, as well as other companies such as Nikola, which is also developing its own truck.
