The new BMW 5 Series is unveiled (in disguise) in its first official image

The seventh generation of one of the longest-running models of BMW will arrive soon. The 5 Series is expected to receive its replacement within a few months, although we had not yet had the chance to see the planned changes to its bodywork. That has changed today, though not entirely. The brand itself has published several photos of the new model, although it has done so while keeping the disguise it uses to prevent it from being photographed.

It shows it in the brand’s workshops, undergoing a scanning session by robotic arms equipped with cameras that are recording the smallest detail of the bodywork. It involves capturing every corner of the car to turn it into a 3D model. With this model an extremely sharp image can be obtained, allowing even the smallest detail to be identified, and any irregularity can be addressed to make this one of the best cars a buyer could find.

With this method it will be possible to work on it more effectively and determine whether there are problems or deviations that could cause aerodynamic issues. The image capture records details down to 0.1 millimetres, which makes it far more practical than the systems used until now.

The technique means the disguise, which is used so the media cannot obtain a clear image of the bodywork, does not get in the way of detecting the saloon’s shapes. As a result, the 3D image obtained will be as perfect as possible, and the brand’s engineers will have no trouble detecting imperfections and correcting them.

This new version is known internally as G30 and, although it is planned to go on sale at the end of this year as one of the models for 2017, we expect to see it at the Paris Motor Show, which takes place this autumn. In the meantime, we have to make do with these images, which, although they do not offer much information, do show us something.
