The new-generation Nissan Leaf is unveiled in Japan

Nissan has unveiled the new generation of the Leaf in Japan, with some minor changes but with more range, one of the things that has been holding back sales of this electric model. In addition, a cheaper variant called S is also offered.

A few months ago we told you what the new generation of the Nissan Leaf would be like, which aimed to offer more range from its electric batteries. Time has passed, and the Leaf had been somewhat relegated to not-so-good news for Nissan, such as the slow pace of its global sales, a situation the brand will try to reverse with the second generation.

The new generation of the Leaf was presented in Tokyo, with the promised improvement in range, but also with some other changes suggested by the model’s customers. A variant that is cheaper in price is also offered.

According to the system Japan uses to calculate range based on consumption, the new Leaf’s range would reach 225 kilometres. That figure is far too optimistic, considering that what has actually been achieved hovers around 120 to 140 kilometres, depending on the ambient temperature. Mechanically, the new Leaf has not changed, although a slight drop in the torque of the electric motors has been noted.

Nissan has also presented the S variant, with a lower price. The price is lower because the trim levels are not as good or as numerous, nor of the same quality as its bigger sibling, and not because its driving range will be reduced or its battery pack swapped for a smaller one, as Nissan previewed. So if you were waiting to buy a Leaf and thought its price was too high, the S version will probably arrive in Europe at a competitive price.
