The new generation of the electric Smart ForTwo and ForFour, ready for 2017

Smart is preparing for next year the introduction of the new generation of electric versions of its city models, which will offer the option of this type of drive from next year, 2017, and which will be presented at the Paris Motor Show in October

The Smart are one of the brands specialising in small city cars that are most popular worldwide, and their models can be seen in almost every city around the world. They are cars that allow you to move through the streets with comfort and agility and, in addition, they are ideal for parking. They do not have large engines, which do not reach one litre of capacity, and their power outputs are very limited. Their use in the city usually amounts to around 50 km a day, so it was only a matter of time before an electric version arrived.

The new generation of the Smart ForTwo and ForFour with electric drive will be available from 2017, with a new version that will improve battery performance and the equipment of both models. The work appears to be quite advanced, since it has been announced that they could be ready for presentation at the Paris Motor Show, in October.

The arrival of these new electric versions will not only affect the way we get around the city, since the brand has also announced that it will launch a car rental programme with combustion-engined cars available to users of this type of electric vehicle, in case they need to make journeys where they require greater range, similar to what BMW offers users of its electric vehicles.

While we wait for more information about these electrically powered variants, we know that the Smart Brabus, which will also be presented at the Paris Motor Show, will feature the 900 cc turbocharged engine that currently powers the Smart ForTwo, but tuned to deliver more power. In this model, as with its bigger sibling the ForFour, other parts have also been improved, such as the brakes and suspension, as well as the exterior and interior of the car.

With the addition of this electric version, Smart will consolidate its position in its segment, with cars that will meet all the expectations of potential buyers of this type of car designed for the city.
