The new SUV from Skoda will be called Kamiq

We finally know the name of the newest member of the Skoda SUV family. This new compact crossover now has a name: Skoda Kamiq.

Skoda has drawn on the Inuit language to find a single word that names and describes what will be the younger sibling of the Skoda Kodiaq and the Skoda Karoq. Kamiq, which shares its first and last letters with the names of Skoda’s other SUVs, translates as a versatile garment that adapts to any situation. A real statement of intent.

A new urban crossover in the Skoda range

The Skoda Kamiq is the cousin of the Seat Arona and is also related, though in a different segment, to the new Volkswagen Polo. Thanks to sharing the MQB platform architecture of the Volkswagen Group, this new car shares DNA with several established models, some of which will be direct rivals.

We therefore expect the petrol engines of the Skoda Kamiq to be the three-cylinder 1.0-litre TSI units with 100 or 120 CV, as well as the four-cylinder 1.5-litre with 150 CV. As for the Skoda Kamiq diesel, the 1.6-litre engine with 115 CV could be the chosen one.

Pending confirmation, a version such as the Skoda Kamiq hybrid is likely, since by 2020 the Czech brand plans to offer up to 9 electrified cars, whether fully electric or hybrid.

A new era for Skoda

This new urban SUV has been conceived under the new design lines we saw in the Skoda Vision X prototype, and which already appear on the production version of the Skoda Scala. That is an added incentive because, building on this new image, the new Skoda Kamiq brings a more visually appealing stance to the brand’s crossovers.

As for its practicality and comfort, Skoda claims it will strike an optimal balance between agility and handling while combining the characteristics of an SUV. These qualities rely on the body’s ground clearance, which gives a raised seating position, improving visibility and making it easier for all occupants to get in and out of the vehicle.

The presentation of the Skoda Kamiq

Besides officially confirming the name Skoda Kamiq, we now also know that its world premiere will take place next March. It will be among the novelties at the Geneva Motor Show, which runs from 5 to 17 March.

Shortly after, sales of the Skoda Kamiq will begin, with the first units possibly reaching dealerships before the first half of 2019.
