The new Volkswagen Passat already has a price and an arrival date in Spain

The update to the new Volkswagen Passat subtly modifies its look and focuses on a revision of its engines and driver assistance systems

The new Volkswagen Passat arrives with the premise of updating a benchmark model from the German brand, both the saloon body and its Variant estate version, as well as the more adventurous one, the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, and a version with an ECO label, the GTE variant. They are offered with four trim levels: Passat, Business, Executive and R-Line. A renewal that affects its image, its mechanics and incorporates new or improved technological elements.

And, just as it is essential to update electronic devices, cars must be rejuvenated or reinvented every few years. This is the case of the Volkswagen Passat 2019, which sees its exterior look refreshed but undergoes a thorough revision of its mechanics and of the technology it carries and offers.

The new look of the Volkswagen Passat 2019

Regarding the image of the Volkswagen Passat, the new wedge-shaped headlights stand out. Besides giving it a renewed appearance, they integrate IQ.LIGHT headlights with LED Matrix lighting and, at the rear, it debuts a new layout and distinction between the position lights and the brake lights, which change depending on which ones are activated, as you can see in the following video.

An aspect that brings it closer to the flagship of the brand, as it takes on features already seen on the Volkswagen Arteon.

The engines of the new Volkswagen Passat

For this update, the engines are the great protagonists of this revision. Thus, the engines of the Volkswagen Passat 2019 will feature new additions under the bonnet, both in diesel and petrol versions.

The new Volkswagen Passat diesel will be sold with the 1.6-litre TDI unit producing 120 CV and the 2.0 TDI from the previous version, with an output of 190 or 240 CV. In addition, a new intermediate power variant will be sold as the 2.0 TDI Evo with 150 CV.

Meanwhile, as the Volkswagen Passat petrol, the two chosen units are the 1.5-litre TSI and the 2.0-litre TSI with 150 CV for the smaller displacement, and 190 or 272 CV for the one with the larger capacity.

It should be noted that, regardless of the fuel, these Volkswagen Passats will incorporate a particulate filter or GPF.

New Volkswagen Passat GTE

Later on, the manufacturer sets the arrival of the variant as a hybrid car for 2021, a PHEV vehicle, that is, a plug-in hybrid Volkswagen Passat. The Volkswagen Passat GTE will offer an electric-mode range which, on the WLTP cycle, will be set at 56 km, and will deliver a combined output of 218 CV.

Greater driving satisfaction

As for the interior of the Volkswagen Passat 2019, a new digital instrument cluster appears, the Digital Cockpit, whose width is 11.7 inches. In addition, for the infotainment system there is also a 6.5-inch touchscreen; 8 or 9.2 inches; with the smallest size included as standard, and which also responds to voice commands. A vehicle that will offer connectivity thanks to the SIM card integrated into its system.

Regarding driver assistance systems, Volkswagen groups them within the IQ.DRIVE package, where the Travel Assistant debuts, which will give semi-autonomous driving to this update of the Volkswagen Passat. A tool that will ease driving from start to finish, as it can be used from the moment you start moving up to a speed of 210 km/h.

Its intervention, without replacing human action, goes beyond setting a cruise speed or maintaining the safety distance. The Travel Assistant also adjusts the steering of the vehicle in case of a possible lane change, or modifies its speed according to the speed limits of the roads it travels on, even adapting it when approaching intersections or entering urban roads.

It will also be able to carry out evasive manoeuvres or protect its occupants if necessary. For example, it would intervene in the face of an obstacle on the road or if, after more than 10 seconds without detecting hands on the steering wheel and, given the audible, visual and dynamic warnings established, the driver does not resume driving. In that case it would interpret that an emergency situation is occurring, would autonomously stop the vehicle outside the edges of the carriageway and would proceed to alert the emergency services.

More levels of personalisation for the new Volkswagen Passat

The possibility of personalising the interior involves enjoying new materials and up to a total of 30 colours or tones to choose from for different elements which, together with the ambient lighting, will be the way to adapt the atmosphere of the new Volkswagen Passat to the taste of its occupants.

Marketing and price of the Volkswagen Passat

Reservations for the first units have been open since 1 July, and they will reach Spanish dealerships from October onwards.

As the reference RRP, the price of the new Volkswagen Passat starts at 33,520 euros for the diesel version, with a 1.6 TDI engine, 120 CV, combined with a DSG automatic gearbox.
