The new Volvo EM90 is hinted at in leaked images ahead of its presentation

Times are changing in the car industry, and we are not only referring to the current transition towards electric mobility. Who could have imagined that one day we would find a minivan in the product line of Volvo? Well, this is precisely what is about to happen.

The Swedish manufacturer, now under the control of the Chinese giant Geely, announced last August its intention to sell a new model called the EM90. Although at that time it did not give many details and left a wide margin for imagination as to what type of vehicle it would be.

New images published on social media by the company itself now make it much clearer that we are dealing with a unique vehicle, never before seen in the history of the Swedish manufacturer. Contrary to what has been rumoured until now, the EM90 is not going to be a conventional minivan; instead, its design will show two distinct volumes, just as happens, for example, with the Zeekr 009.

Zeekr is another of the brands of the Chinese giant Geely, and everything points to the Volvo EM90 and the Zeekr 009 sharing many elements in common, starting with the SEA platform –Sustainable Electric Architecture-. We should also recall that Zeekr decided not to sell its 009 minivan in Europe, and one of the reasons may precisely have been not to take market share away from the future Volvo EM90.

The Volvo EM90 could also be equipped with the same Qilin battery pack from the Chinese manufacturer CATL, with 140 kWh of capacity. With this battery pack the Zeekr 009 is capable of covering up to 822 km on a single charge, under the excessively optimistic Chinese homologation cycle CLTC. The 009 also features a dual electric motor that together can deliver 394 kW of power.

Volvo will officially present the new EM90 on 12 November, and from that same date it will begin accepting reservations in the Chinese market. For the time being, the Swedish manufacturer has not revealed when reservations will open in other markets such as Europe, but in principle it should not be much later.
