The next Mazda2 could be produced as a twin of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid

A supposed agreement between brands would allow Mazda to offer a new Mazda2 built on the same architecture as the Toyota Yaris Hybrid

Mazda, like other brands, have been forced to boost their range of crossovers. Half of the firm’s lineup is made up of SUVs, and the rest is split between a city car, a compact, a saloon and a sports car.

Starting at the end, the Mazda MX-5 is the last of the Mohicans in the lineup, a vehicle out of step with times when crossovers are in fashion and open-top sports cars at a moderately affordable price are left to young adults in existential crises, which barely sell.

The saloon, the Mazda6, in both sedan and wagon body styles, is fading away like MPVs, at a different pace, with greater resilience but succumbing to fashion…

The compact, the sublime Mazda3, also available as a sedan or 5-door, which according to sales charts is the first non-SUV from Mazda to sell the most and the brand’s second best-selling model in Spain.

And the city car, the star of this article, the Mazda2, in no man’s land, in the middle of the sales charts, sells roughly 15 times fewer units than, for example, its Japanese compatriot, the Toyota Yaris, despite a slightly higher RRP. However, since its new generation, it has inexorably embraced hybridisation, among other things, as a commercial draw.

Herein lies the key for Mazda regarding the upcoming Mazda2 of 2022.

Mazda2, renew or die

And so, as the colleagues at Autocar announce, Mazda may have reached an agreement with Toyota so that the next Mazda2 is based on the architecture of the Toyota Yaris. Apparently, the next Mazda2 could be produced in collaboration, not to say ‘by’ Toyota, using the very same Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

Judging by the information about Mazda’s roadmap from 2021 onwards, the current Mazda2 could be facing its final months on sale. Remember that this is a model that appeared in 2015 and which, in line with the new generation of the Mazda3, requires an update. The deep restyling carried out in 2019 is what currently sits on showroom floors, so a new generation would be on the way.

A new Mazda2 that we may already know in essence since, as the colleagues at the British outlet point out, it could be considered a subtle conversion of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid we were able to drive, a deal similar to the one that, not so long ago, put on dealer forecourts one of the most popular cars of late 2020, the Suzuki Swace, an adaptation of the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports.
