After an endless parade of Mustang versions has passed before our eyes, unless you are a devoted fan of the pony, there isn’t much left to see once you’ve seen the last one. But let’s say this variant is a bit different, because it brings together two great names that have always been linked to the Mustang: Shelby and tuner Roush.

The SR-71 is the first collaboration between Carroll Shelby and Jack Roush. The name was chosen because its colours are based on the Lockheed Martin SR-71 “Blackbird” aircraft. Apart from a paint job similar to the famous plane, mechanically there is nothing new, since the SR-71 is the same as the GT that comes with the glass roof, but with the addition of several accessories sold by the Ford itself in its catalogue: the supercharger, a suspension package, the exhaust system and the SVT wheels.

The interior is where a certain degree of personalisation is most noticeable. The instruments have been swapped for more sporty ones and the finishing details of the dashboard, including the navigation screen, have been modified. Competition seats and steering wheel have been added, the rear seat (a token one) has been removed, it has a roll bar and new floor mats.

This Mustang will be built as a single unit that will be auctioned for the benefit of an organisation dedicated to spreading the fundamentals of aviation among children and young people. Not much to get excited about, except that this is a collector’s model and that it won’t even be auctioned in favour of a slightly nobler cause.
