Opel launches a new three-cylinder petrol engine featuring the most advanced technology, opening the way for a new family of small-displacement engines with excellent fuel economy.

It is a small 1,000 cc turbocharged engine called SIDI Turbo. In the first instance it will be fitted to the Adam city car, although over the coming months it will be offered in other models such as the Astra and the Corsa.

Its official presentation will take place next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and its figures are similar to those of the Ecoboost engine from the Ford group.
The SIDI Turbo 1.0 delivers 115 CV and 166 Nm of torque, making it 20% more efficient than the 1.6 engine it replaces.
This engine is the first of a modular family of 3 or 4 engines, all equipped with technologies such as an aluminium crankcase, direct injection and an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.

Furthermore, this version comes paired with a new 6-speed manual gearbox, replacing the previous 5-speed unit that was combined with the naturally aspirated 1.6 engine. Weighing just 37 kg, it handles up to 220 Nm of torque while being extremely compact, measuring only 375 mm in length.
This launch responds to the brand’s plans to renew its powertrain range, and continues the line set by the first 1.6 SIDI Turbo engines already fitted to the Astra and Insignia. From now on the German company is expected to present a new member of the SIDI family roughly every six months.
