The Opel Insignia 2020 is updated to face the end of its commercial life
The Opel Insignia 2020 can be reserved from January and introduces slight aesthetic, mechanical and technological changes
The Opel Insignia 2020 has arrived and, although it is hard to tell apart from its predecessor, this facelift has updated the model so that it remains an attractive alternative. We are in the final commercial stage of this generation, and this refresh will be presented at the Brussels Motor Show.
Although the aesthetic changes are really subtle, we can spot a new grille and a redesign of the front headlights. At the bottom of the front bumper, we see a generous air intake and two new vertical openings housing two small circular fog lights.
The rear bumper has also been slightly redesigned, so now we can see a small diffuser at the bottom. Furthermore, it seems that the Opel Insignia 2020 has jumped on the fashion for fake exhausts, as we can see two chrome trims that house the real exhaust pipes within them. With all this, the brand claims the car now looks “lower and wider than before”, making it “more like a Coupé”. Judge for yourselves.
More technology
Opel has not shared photos of its interior, although it has provided information about the changes made to the cabin. To begin with, a new wireless smartphone charger has been installed and a new infotainment system. According to the brand, it will have “a fresher and more modern look”, and it will also be compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and offered with a screen available in two sizes: seven or eight inches.
To keep the German saloon at the forefront of technology, new driver assistance systems have been integrated. As a result, the Opel Insignia 2020 now features a new rear parking camera with rear cross-traffic alert, front collision alert with automatic emergency braking, blind spot alert, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and a Head-Up Display.
It is quite possible that the Opel Insignia 2020 will use PSA engines
What we don’t have data on is whether this update affects the mechanical side, although Opel has confirmed that all information on this front will be given in January. However, it seems logical that it will abandon GM powertrains in favour of those from the PSA Group, of which Opel has been a member since 2017.
Therefore, the engines available on the Opel Insignia 2020 may be the same as those in the Peugeot 508 range we tested a few months ago. This means it could have two petrol options – PureTech 180 and PureTech 225 – three diesels – BlueHDI 130, BlueHDI 160 and BlueHDI 180 – and it could even get the plug-in hybrid powertrain of the Peugeot 508 Hybrid.
The Opel Insignia 2020 can be reserved from January of next year, although the first units will not be delivered until May. We still don’t know prices, but in view of the updates, they will be somewhat higher than the current variant on the market.
