The PHEV version of the new Skoda Superb brings an unexpected surprise

The new Skoda Superb has been developed with the aim of maintaining the strengths of the previous generation, while improving its exterior design, comfort and the level of integrated technology

The Czech car manufacturer, part of the Volkswagen Group, has just presented the fourth generation of its popular Superb, once again available in two variants, saloon and estate. However, those interested in the plug-in hybrid version will only be able to opt for the latter, called Superb Combi.

The new Superb uses the same propulsion system as its sibling, the Volkswagen Passat ninth generation, presented last September.

Skoda Superb Interior

The plug-in hybrid version of the Superb delivers a total of 150 kW of power and features a high-voltage battery that increases its capacity to 25.7 kWh. Skoda promises that, in this way, it is possible to drive more than 100 km without consuming a single drop of fuel in exclusively electric mode. This represents an increase of about 40 km over the previous generation. Although some rumours suggested the possible future commercialisation of a more powerful PHEV version with 200 kW, it now seems that this is not part of the Czech manufacturer’s plans.

More electric range and less time at the charging point

There are also new developments regarding battery charging. When using an AC Wallbox, the new Superb plug-in hybrid features an internal charger of up to 11 kW. But that is not all, because now there is also the possibility of DC charging of up to 50 kW. And to make it even easier, Skoda plans to support the Plug&Charge standard, thanks to which the cost of charging will be billed directly to the owner’s account without the need for any other step when connecting the cable.

It is also worth noting that this plug-in hybrid version now has a 1.5-litre petrol engine, instead of the 1.4-litre engine of the previous generation. The Skoda Superb also borrows some other features from the new Passat, such as Adaptive Chassis Control, or an updated version of the infotainment system.

Skoda Superb Combi Back

In terms of dimensions, the Superb Combi measures 4.90 metres in length. That is four centimetres more than its predecessor. Conversely, it is 1.5 centimetres narrower, at 1.85 metres; but it is also 5 millimetres taller, at 1.48 metres. The wheelbase in this case is 2.84 metres. Skoda states that this Combi variant increases luggage space to 690 litres -30 more than the equivalent previous model-.

Although Volkswagen recently announced the ID.7 Tourer, Skoda does not seem intent on following the German manufacturer’s lead with a fully electric Superb Combi, at least until 2026.
