Porsche is finalising the details of a new concept. If you are waiting for news of a new supercar from Stuttgart, hold on to your seat, because what awaits us is something very different. It will not be a supercar as we are used to, or at least it will not be a supercar meant to be driven on tarmac. What Porsche is saving for the Beijing Motor Show in April is the Porsche 911 Safari.

You can imagine where we are going when we say “Safari”: off-road competitions and raid rallies. That is what Porsche is now aiming at with this new 911 Safari, a conventional 911 with raised suspension, larger tyres and based on the Carrera 4.

Depending on how the model is received in Beijing, the German brand will decide whether or not this 911 designed for off-road outings goes into series production. If it does, it would arrive in 2016 linked to an update of the Boxer engines, although this time with smaller displacement than the current ones.

But what does Porsche intend with this concept? The 911 that some call the “911 crossover” could easily be sold to the wealthy of the Middle East and might even become fashionable among the jet set; you don’t see a 911 with these characteristics every day, but it is no madness either. It should be remembered that in the past Porsche entered several 911s in off-road competitions. In fact, it was the only brand to win competitions as different as the Dakar and the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the same car, the 959.
