The Renault Espace could return as an MPV, but... what will happen to the SUV?

The Renault Espace has returned to the market, but it has done so as an SUV. This is the body style that is most in fashion in the automotive industry, having displaced all the others. But many nostalgic fans of the old Renault Espace, the MPV, protested this change. The most classic models have many followers, and they want the essence of these models to be respected. That is why Renault seems ready to present an MPV. But will it be the successor to the Espace?

The statements of Laurens Van Den Acker, Head of Design at Renault, seem to hint that the intentions of Luca de Meo, CEO of the French brand, are aimed at reviving the brand’s most iconic models. One of those legendary models that could be revived is the Espace, in its MPV form.

The viability of this model would depend on the use of the Ampr Medium platform, which underpins the Megane and Scenic crossovers. With this model, Renault could have a rival to compete with models such as the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, but also with models coming from China that are reintroducing the MPV body style to the European market.

To offer an electric vehicle of these characteristics, several technological changes that pose significant challenges must take place. An MPV of this kind would exceed two tonnes in weight, so it will need structural changes to the platform and requires rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

This model is envisaged as a revival of this classic model, but updated and open to current technology and electric mobility. A blend of innovation and driving sensations drawn from the brand’s past, so that fans of the model can rediscover it and once again enjoy its versatility.

It remains up in the air what would happen in this case with the new Renault Espace, the seven-seat SUV. Would its name change to allow the return of the MPV, or would this one use another name? As everything is, for the moment, up in the air, we will have to wait and see whether the MPV finally returns to the Renault lineup.
