Audi will celebrate one more anniversary before the end of 2009, with the 75th birthday of the Silver Arrows. These legendary German racing cars began their conquest of circuits around the world in 1934. Until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the drivers of Auto Union (and Mercedes-Benz) rarely failed to win with these true masterpieces that produced 500 horsepower.

It was the era of those drivers in leather helmets, with no safety measures whatsoever, on tracks (or quite simply on public roads) with no safety at all. These cars were capable of reaching and even exceeding top speeds equal to those of today’s Formula 1 cars.

The exhibition to be held, called The Silver Family: the Silver Arrows of Auto Union and their rivals, shows the few Auto Union cars rescued after the Second World War, when they were confiscated by Soviet forces and some were lost forever. Only a careful reconstruction based on photographs and drawings made it possible to recover these examples.

In total, four examples of Audi and three of Mercedes-Benz will be shown. An unmissable exhibition for those lucky enough to pass through Ingolstadt and see much of the history of the racing car.
