The Sound Racer and the Illusion of a V12 in Your Car

Although the magic of 12 cylinders may seem like an impossible dream, it is still possible to indulge the illusion of having a V12 engine under the bonnet, albeit in an unconventional way. Sound Racer is a device that connects to the car’s cigarette lighter and emits V8, V10 or V12 engine sounds through one of the channels of the car’s FM radio receiver.

Its operation is based on detecting signals from the alternator rather than from the ignition. That is why Sound Racer can also work in diesel cars. The sounds heard through the car’s sound system are real sounds; for example, the V12 is a Ferrari 512BBLM, whose sound was recorded at the Mugello circuit.

A toy that I think can be entertaining for a while, as the sound makes us press the accelerator harder, to the alarm of those who are worried about the petrol we are going to burn. The illusion is achieved, no matter that we are driving our everyday car.
